Government Committee Reviews Civil Defense Measures Amid Rising Nile Levels

The Security and State Authority Committee, part of the Higher Committee for Preparing the Environment for Citizens’ Return to Khartoum State, chaired by Sovereignty Council member and Deputy Commander-in-Chief Lt. Gen. Eng. Ibrahim Jaber Ibrahim, reviewed precautionary measures taken by Civil Defense to address potential flooding along the Nile.

In its 12th session, the committee heard a detailed briefing from the Civil Defense Directorate, which confirmed that Nile water levels had dropped from 13.5 meters to 12 meters at Al-Diem station—a decrease of 1.78 meters.

The committee urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid vulnerable areas.

Civil Defense Chief Lt. Gen. Dr. Osman Atta said advance preparations were in place, with monitoring points established along the riverbanks to plug potential breaches and deal with threats to lives and property. He also confirmed the deployment of river rescue units for direct intervention.

Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Hassan Dawoud Kabroun, who heads the security subcommittee, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to removing unregulated housing and instructed authorities to provide legal alternatives for affected residents.

He also announced ongoing crackdowns on irregular foreign presence in Khartoum State, directing refugee authorities to transfer regularized refugees to camps and deport violators. Citizens were warned against renting homes or shops to foreigners without approval from relevant authorities.

The minister stressed that carrying weapons or wearing military uniforms outside official duties and barracks is prohibited, urging citizens to surrender weapons or military gear to army units or police stations to avoid prosecution.

Kabroun further emphasized the ongoing campaign to seize unregistered motorcycles and vehicles, ordering regularization of official fleet vehicles and ensuring personnel carry identification and documentation.

The committee appealed to citizens to support authorities by reporting suspicious items and negative phenomena to help stabilize security.
