Efforts to Contain Armed Conflict in Darfur Fail

Three sources in the city of Malit, north of Al-Fashir in North Darfur, reported that local efforts to contain tribal fighting between farmers and herders in the town of Al-Siyah, east of Malit, last week have faltered.

The clashes in Al-Siyah resulted in four deaths among farmers and herders after livestock entered local farmlands. Sources told Darfour24 that herders brought their cattle into farms believed to belong to the Midob community, sparking disputes that escalated into violent clashes with gunfire, killing two farmers and two herders.

The herders demanded the arrest of those responsible for killing one of their members, Osman Al-Ghali, and mobilized forces, prompting local authorities to intervene to calm the situation.

“One group arrived in Malit, while the opposing side also mobilized in Al-Siyah. Local authorities intervened, but their efforts were thwarted by the stubbornness of both parties,” a local North Darfur leader told Darfour24.

Temporary measures were taken to halt mobilization and engage both sides, but efforts ultimately failed due to the insistence of the victim’s family on capturing the perpetrators, raising fears of renewed fighting.
