UN Official: Militia Drone Strikes Kill 306 Sudanese in a Single Month

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk revealed that 306 Sudanese people had been killed and hundreds injured in drone attacks during October.

In a statement, Türk said that “the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights documented the killing of at least 306 people and the injury of hundreds more as a result of drone attacks during the first three weeks of October.”

He explained that drone strikes attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia had targeted civilian objects and infrastructure, including homes, markets, hospitals, displacement sites, power generation stations, and water sources.

Türk condemned the escalation of drone strikes across Sudan and their devastating consequences for civilians in Kordofan, Darfur, Blue Nile, Khartoum, and other states.

“The increasing use of drones, which have already caused the majority of conflict-related civilian deaths in Sudan this year, is deeply alarming and is resulting in horrific loss of life,” he added.

He noted that retaliatory strikes were emerging as a worrying trend, citing reports that RSF drones had attacked Khartoum, including the airport area, allegedly in response to airstrikes said to have been carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces against Nyala in South Darfur State.

Türk renewed his call on all parties to the conflict to respect their clear and binding obligations under international humanitarian law, including refraining from directing attacks against civilians and civilian objects.
