IGAD Calls on Sudan War Parties to Stop Hostilities immediately

The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebehu, has urged all warring parties in Sudan to immediately cease hostilities and prioritize the pursuit of a political settlement.
In a statement marking the first anniversary of the Sudan war, Workneh stressed the need to redouble efforts to address the dire humanitarian situation and the widespread human suffering, recognizing the serious repercussions of the conflict on the stability of Sudan and the broader region.
“The conflict that has continued for more than 12 months has inflicted untold suffering on millions of Sudanese citizens, adding to the already dire humanitarian situation,” he said.
He called on all parties concerned to work closely with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and its Special Envoy, to effectively secure a nationwide ceasefire, sustain the truce, and implement humanitarian measures to help alleviate the pain. Workneh stressed the utmost necessity of starting a comprehensive process led by the Sudanese that confirms that a political settlement is the only channel to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the Sudanese conflict.
The IGAD stressed its firm commitment to cooperate with the African Union, neighboring countries and all concerned Sudanese parties in order to achieve lasting peace and stability.
