Paris Olympics: Vondrousova withdraws from tennis competitions

Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova said Monday that she has withdrawn from the Summer Olympics in Paris due to a hand injury.

Vondrousova (25 years old) reached the women’s final in Tokyo three years ago as an unseeded player, and lost to Swiss Belinda Bencic, seeded ninth, to win the Olympic silver medal.

The Swiss player, who gave birth to a baby girl last April, will not participate in Paris to defend her title.

“I am very sorry, but for health reasons I will not participate in this year’s Olympic Games in Paris. I was hoping until the last minute that I would be able to at least participate in the doubles, but the problems with my hands did not allow me to enter the court.” Vondrousova posted on her Instagram account.

Katerina Siniakova, who won doubles gold at the last Olympics and won nine Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, will play instead of Vondrousova in singles, and Linda Noskova will play in doubles with Karolina Muchová.
