A Health Crisis in Bahri City and Similar Conditions in Other Areas of Khartoum Capital
Sudan Events – Agencies
Various areas of Khartoum capital are facing catastrophic health conditions due to the ongoing war between the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which has lasted for nearly a year and a half. Reports and pleas from emergency rooms and resistance committees in several localities in Khartoum have revealed a disruption in the supply chains of medicines and medical aids, along with the spread of many epidemics and diseases. The concerned authorities have been urged to intervene immediately to save citizens from the catastrophic consequences.
Health Crisis in Bahri City
The Emergency Room of Bahri City issued an urgent appeal to address the catastrophic health situation following the outbreak of an epidemic in many neighborhoods of the city. The room reported that Shambat Al-Hilla and Al-Halfaya neighborhoods have recorded numerous cases of typhoid and malaria among citizens, amid a lack of medicines, antibiotics, and intravenous fluids.
In a press release issued today, the room announced the health situation in the city has reached an extreme level of deterioration due to the absence of state-run health institutions. It warned of the collapse of the medicine supply chain for nearly a year and a half, leading to the spread of diseases related to malnutrition and environmental pollution, alongside the lack of essential food supplies.
The room stated that the city is witnessing a widespread outbreak of diseases such as acute watery diarrhea and cholera, in addition to increasing cases of typhoid and malaria, and other undiagnosed diseases due to the lack of diagnostic tools and the shutdown of hospitals. It added that the absence of specialized healthcare workers is exacerbating the crisis, despite the tremendous efforts made by the doctors present in the city and those assisting them via phone and internet.
The statement highlighted the suffering of women due to the prolonged absence of basic supplies like sanitary pads, leading to severe infections that could affect reproductive health and, in some cases, result in death. Pregnant women are also facing inadequate healthcare, leading to a rise in fetal deaths. Many mothers are unaware of fetal death, which can cause severe, potentially fatal poisoning.
The absence of essential vaccinations for children, such as measles and tuberculosis, has led to an increase in cases of these dangerous diseases, threatening the lives of thousands of children.
The room held officials and UN workers accountable for the lack of appropriate response to this crisis, emphasizing the need to prioritize safe humanitarian aid routes in all discussions and agendas related to Sudan.
Emergency in Omdurman
In Omdurman, the Emergency Room of Umbada called on local and international civil society organizations working in the health field to urgently deliver medicines and intravenous fluids to save citizens. The Al-Safwa neighborhood in Umbada locality recorded nine deaths due to the spread of cholera and malaria.
