The Sudan Doctors Network said that more than 21 people, including women and children, were killed and others injured following an attack carried out by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Abdel Aziz al-Hilu faction, against areas inhabited by the Atoro tribe in Debi and Lueri, south and west of Kauda in South Kordofan State. The attacks also caused a large number of civilians to flee the area.
In a statement issued on Friday, the network condemned the attacks carried out by the SPLM, al-Hilu faction, against areas inhabited by the Atoro tribe. It said the attacks came after a ceasefire agreement and represented a clear violation of the accord, a resumption of fighting, and the targeting of civilians on an ethnic basis.
The network added that the attacks resulted in the displacement of large numbers of civilians from their homes, constituting a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians.
The Sudan Doctors Network called on the international community and regional and international organizations to pressure the SPLM, al-Hilu faction, and its leaders to halt these violations and abide by the ceasefire agreement.
It warned that violating the agreement and the resumption of ethnically motivated fighting could mark the beginning of a new wave of displacement among communities in Kauda and further worsen the suffering of civilians, particularly during the rainy season. This, it said, could exacerbate the humanitarian situation and lead to a humanitarian catastrophe requiring urgent action by the international community and humanitarian organizations.
